Nature-Based Solutions

DEFINITION
Youth4Capacity and Climate Words

Nature-based solutions refers to a wide range of actions that utilise nature to tackle the negative impacts of climate change and biodiversity loss. These solutions often deliver multiple benefits for people and planet, from protecting vulnerable coastal communities and ensuring food security, to sequestering carbon emissions and supporting ecosystems. For example, across Asia work is underway to conserve and restore Mangrove forests which act as a natural buffer against flooding, as well as absorbing carbon dioxide emissions and supporting the livelihoods of local communities working in the fishing and eco-tourism industries. In 2022, the United Nations Environment Assembly formally recognised nature-based solutions and the crucial role they play in mitigating and adapting to the worst impacts of our changing climate.
